Creative Spotlight: an interview with the creator of Knot + Stitch

Today we have something special for you all. I’m interviewing my daughter, who created her own business this summer – Knot + Stitch. We talk about her creative journey, what inspired her to start a business, and where she hopes to go with it in the future.

So…without further introduction: our interview!

First, tell our readers a little bit about yourself, won’t you?

Sure. Hi, my name is Myriah and I’m 19 years old. I’m the eldest of four, and that means I can make dinner and tutor math at the same time. I have a lot of hobbies besides knitting and crocheting, even though that’s what I’m doing right now. In the future, I want to do either web design or cinematography (or both, if it works out that way). I also play the piano occasionally and work as the engineer for Returning to Eden – a live show on WawRadio.

You’ve always been creative, haven’t you?

Pretty much. I drew when I was younger (lots and lots of horses). I learned to crochet from a book we had sitting on the shelf. I’d work with my dad on house projects, and sit in the studio with him during live shows. There probably isn’t a day that goes by when I’m not making something, or thinking about making something.

Then you started Knot + Stitch. Why?

Right. I started Knot + Stitch in the summer of 2017. I was graduated, and so I had a lot of extra time on my hands. I had developed a passion for knitting and it made sense to me that I could possibly turn it into another business for myself.

This wasn’t my first time with a creative business, either. When my family had the Co-op, I was really into macrame. I would buy glass blown pendants and hemp cord on Ebay, and make necklaces with them. I made pretty good money back then, haha.

But with Knot + Stitch, I’m not just doing macrame. I’m doing a combination of crochet and knit, as well.

Which do you like best – knit, crochet, or macrame?

I like them all for different reasons! Crocheting is definitely quicker, but I think knitting looks prettier. Macrame is easier than it looks, but it’s really time consuming and intricate work.

What are you making now? And what are you planning to make in the future?

I am working on my first knitted beanie. I’m not following a particular pattern, because I want it to be something I genuinely created. I’m really pleased with it so far, and I hope that it’ll be released into the shop soon!

I don’t have any macrame goods in the shop, so that’s in my sights for the future. I’d love to make some plant hangers, and wall hangings, but I’m a little tied up with yarn supplies right now. Once I finish those out, I can start working with macrame again.

Where do you get inspiration for your projects?

laughs* Honestly, I hate to mention it because it’s a cliche: I get my inspiration from Pinterest. There are so many amazing ideas there from all over the world. There’s no end to it.

Where do you hope Knot + Stitch will go in the future?

I’d love to get an Etsy store. But that’s not something I’m working on right now because I don’t feel that I have enough to sell just yet. And my product photos aren’t good enough for Etsy, so I really need to improve on that. Basically, there are a ton of things I need to get better at before I open an Etsy store.

Where can people go to find out more about Knot + Stitch, and you?

High Desert Farm Life!

MULTI-TASKING Love this …HUMAN multitasking.

Definition is as follows:

Human multitasking is an apparent human ability to perform more than one task, or activity, over a short period. An example of multitasking is taking phone calls while typing an email and reading a book. Multitasking can result in time wasted due to human context switching and apparently causing more errors due to insufficient attention. Studies have shown that it is impossible to focus on more than one task at a time. However, if one is proficient at one of the tasks at hand, then it is possible to do these tasks.

Well,I have to say..this is ME! Being a wife and mom, carrying many hats, I sure fit the bill of this definition. I didn’t realize there was a “human” side of multitasking. But, google says there is! LOL!  And honesty, I like being busy! I feel like I am accomplishing tasks at hand.

Other than health and wellness, homesteading is a true joy for me. I have to say I am ADDICTED!  When I was younger,my only animal friend I had was a gold fish. Far from homesteading, I took care of that fish till its last days. A very proud pet owner

Now, I have a beautiful set up of my four legged friends at our desert homestead. Well, chickens I guess would not be in the four legged category, but they are sure cute critters! And I do enjoy them!

With homesteading you met some neat like minded people. And this recent Shalom Pod cast with a dear sister, Ali Snowdale of Snowdale Acres, is one of my favorite interviews. I adore Ali, or as we call her Mrs. Snowdale. She is not only a homesteader, but a true friend indeed. I hope you all enjoy our Shalom Pod with Snowdale Acres.

Shalom Pod – The Urban Homestead

I was very honored and excited to have Anais Dervaes of the Urban Homestead join me on Shalom Pod this past week.   It was so comfortable to have her share about homesteading and enjoying fellowship in a very relaxing interview.

Hope you will enjoy listening to this sweet time, Anais of The Urban Homestead and I had.
